How to Look After Your Lawn in the Australian Summer

Australian summers can be brutal on lawns. With scorching temperatures, intense UV radiation, and unpredictable rainfall, your grass faces serious challenges from December through February. However, with the right care routine, you can maintain a healthy, green lawn that survives and even thrives during the hottest months of the year.

Water Deeply and Wisely

Watering is the most critical aspect of summer lawn care. The key is to water deeply but infrequently, encouraging roots to grow deeper into the soil where moisture is more stable. Aim for about 25-30mm of water per week, applied in one or two sessions rather than daily light sprinklings.

Early morning watering is ideal, preferably between 4am and 10am. This timing reduces water loss through evaporation and allows grass blades to dry before nightfall, minimizing disease risk. If morning watering isn't possible, early evening is your second-best option.

During extreme heatwaves or water restrictions, don't stress if your lawn goes dormant and turns brown. Most Australian grass varieties are remarkably resilient and will bounce back once conditions improve.

Adjust Your Mowing Height

Raise your mower blades during summer. Longer grass shades the soil, reducing water evaporation and protecting roots from heat stress. For most Australian lawns, maintain a height of 40-50mm during summer months. Kikuyu and couch grass can handle slightly shorter cuts, but avoid scalping at all costs.

Never remove more than one-third of the grass blade length in a single mow. Cutting too short stresses the plant and makes it more vulnerable to heat damage, weeds, and disease. Keep your mower blades sharp as well, since clean cuts heal faster and reduce moisture loss.

Feed Your Lawn Strategically

While summer isn't the primary fertilizing season, your lawn still needs nutrients to cope with heat stress. Apply a slow-release fertilizer in early summer, preferably one with a higher potassium content. Potassium strengthens cell walls and improves drought tolerance.

Avoid heavy nitrogen applications during peak summer heat, as this encourages soft, lush growth that's more susceptible to stress and requires more water. If you do fertilize, always water thoroughly afterward to prevent fertilizer burn.

Manage Traffic and Shade

Reduce foot traffic on your lawn during the hottest parts of the day when grass is already stressed. Compacted soil restricts root growth and water penetration, making your lawn more vulnerable to summer damage.

Be mindful of shaded areas, which may need less frequent watering than sunny sections. Consider creating separate watering zones if your lawn has significantly different sun exposure throughout the day.

Monitor for Pests and Disease

Summer heat can bring lawn grubs, army worms, and fungal diseases. Inspect your lawn regularly for brown patches, wilting, or unusual bare spots. Early detection makes treatment easier and more effective.

With consistent care and attention to these fundamentals, your Australian lawn can remain healthy and attractive throughout even the harshest summer conditions. Remember, some browning is natural during extreme heat, so don't panic if your lawn isn't picture-perfect every single day.
